Uruguayan President Plans High-Level Meeting in Washington
Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi is planning a major trip to Washington soon. He intends to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin confirmed this news on Wednesday.
He spoke before the Senate International Affairs Committee. Lubetkin stated that the meeting is already agreed upon in principle. Both nations are now working to coordinate their busy schedules.
This summit marks a significant step for Orsi’s government. Since taking office in March, the Broad Front leader has made several moves toward the Republican administration.
These actions have caused some debate within his own political coalition. However, the official goal remains clear. The government wants to strengthen ties with the United States.
Navigating a Complex Calendar

Foreign Ministry sources report a strong willingness from both sides to meet. However, no specific date is set yet. President Trump is currently focused on an international agenda. This includes a summit with Xi Jinping in Beijing and various issues in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the White House has increased its focus on Latin American diplomacy.
Senator Andrés Ojeda was the first to break the news of the potential visit. He urged authorities to make every effort to secure this meeting. Ojeda pointed out that other regional leaders have already made similar trips. These include Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Argentina’s Javier Milei.
Even leaders with sharp political differences, like Colombia’s Gustavo Petro, have been received in Washington.

Controversy and Foreign Policy
President Orsi has faced internal criticism for his recent diplomatic choices.
On May 2, he visited the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.
This took place in international waters near the Uruguayan coast.
Some members of the Broad Front and labor unions questioned the move. Additionally, Orsi recently expressed solidarity with Trump following a security incident at a public dinner.
Orsi defended his actions firmly. He explained that he does not conduct foreign policy for a specific political party. Instead, he acts in the best interest of the entire country.
He believes Uruguay must maintain a strong relationship with the U.S. regardless of which party is in power.
This approach prioritizes institutional continuity over ideological debate. For Uruguay, a stable connection with Washington remains a top historical priority.
